loudness: it physically measures how strong sound is,moreover it is depend onintensity as wellas senstivity of ear,of sound greater amplitude, greater the sound and it measured in (db) decibel.

intensity: it is a amount of sound passing through a unit area per second,it does not depend on senstivity of ear as loudness depend ,it is measure as watt/metre(square)

Sound Intensity

Sound intensity is the amount of energy carried by sound per unit time through a unit area of a selected surface. In order to understand the concept of sound intensity, one must first understand the concept of sound energy.

Sound is one of the main methods of sensing in the human body. We encounter sounds every day. A sound is caused by a vibration

Loudness

Loudness is defined as “the attribute of auditory sensation in terms of which sounds can be ordered on a scale extending from quiet to loud,” by the American National Standards Institute. Loudness is a measurement of the sound perceived by the human ear.

  • -3
loudness is relative whereas intensity is constant.

Intensity of a soundwave is defined as the amount of sound energy passing through a unit per second. Loudness is ameasure of the response of the ear to the sound. A loudness of a sound is defined by its amplitude. The amplitude of a sound decides it's intensity, which in turn is percieved by the ear as loudness.

Definition of loudness. : the attribute of a sound that determines the magnitude of the auditory sensation produced and that primarily depends on the amplitude of the sound wave involved.

intensity is the power transferred per unit area, where the area is measured on the plane perpendicular to the direction of propagation of the energy.
  • -3
We sometimes use the term loudness in place of intensity of sound and vice versa. However, it must be clearly noted that these two terms are not the same. Intensity of sound is an objective physical quantity. However, loudness is a subjective physical quantity and is a measure of the response of the rear to the sound. Even when two sounds are of equal intensity, we may hear one sound as louder than the other simply because our ears detect it better.

Persistence of sound (after the source stops producing sound) due to repeated reflection is known as reverberation. As the source produces sound, it starts travelling in all directions. Once it reaches the wall of a room, it is partly reflected back from the wall. This reflected sound reaches the other wall and again gets reflected partly. Due to this, sound can be heard even after the source has ceased to produce sound.

To reduce reverberations, sound must be absorbed as it reaches the walls and the ceiling of a room. Sound absorbing materials like fibreboard, rough plastic, heavy curtains, and cushioned seats can be used to reduce reverberation.

LOUDNESS - It refers to how loud or soft a sound seems to a listener . The loudness of sound is determined in turn by the intensity or amount of energy in sound waves . the unit of intensity is the decibel(dB) . as decibel levels get higher , sound waves have greater intensity and sounds are louder.
INTENSITY - A measure of field strength or of the energy transmitted by radiation . Radiant intensity , luminous intensity . Average rate of flow of sound energy usually in watts , for one period through unit area at right angles to the specified direction .

Light is Electromagnetic radiation & exhibit dual nature, wave and particles. If u consider light is wave intensity is related to light radiation energy & frequency is the number of waves per second. If you consider light is a particle, each particle in the light radiation is called photon frequency is related to photons energy. In particle nature intensity is related to number of photons in radiation.

Loudness is the physiological response of the ear to the intensity of sound . It distinguish between a loud sound and a low sound . It depends on the intensity of sound and the response of the ear. Intensity is the amount of energy passing each second through a unit area.Large the amplitude of a wave, larger is its intensity.
