Smoke comprises of tiny solid and gaseous byproducts of combustion whereas smog is formed when smoke combines with fog.

 smog is due to manmade pollutants in the atmosphere, where fog is water vaporcollecting into the air at the surface of the earth. Much like clouds forming on the ground.
