What is the limitation of JJ Thomson model of an atom?
Dear student,
Drawbacks of Thomson’s atomic model:
- J.J. Thomson said that an atom consists of a positively charged sphere with embedded electrons in it. However, later it was found that the atom has concentrated mass and the positively charged nucleus is at the center while the negatively charged electrons move in the shells around the nucleus.
- This model did not explain the arrangement of positive and negative charges inside the atoms correctly.
- It failed to explain the atomic spectra.
- It did not explain anything about existence of the nucleus inside the atom.
