1.  The world map is described as “open-ended” because it provides a generous view of the world. The world with all its grand and beautiful places is very different from the gloomy and lifeless world that is surrounding the children.
2. The poet is describing the pictures on the wall. There are pictures of a cloudless dawn and of cities which are adorned with domes that reflect the progress of civilization.
