What is the national food for work programme? Please explain in simple terms.

The National Food for Work Programme (NFFWP) has been launched from the month of November 2004, in 150 most backward districts of the country, identified by the Planning Commission in consultation with the Ministry of Rural Development and the State Governments.The objective of the programme is to provide additional resources apart from the resources available under the Sampoorna Grameen Rozgar Yojana (SGRY) to 150 most backward districts of the country so that generation of supplementary wage employment and providing of food-security through creation of need based economic, social and community assets in these districts is further intensified.

The National Food for Work Programme was launched on 14 November 2004 in 150 of the most backward districts of India with the objective of generating supplementary wage employment. The programme is open to all rural poor who are prepared to do manual, unskilled labour. It is implemented as a centrally-sponsored scheme. Foodgrains are provided to the States free of cost.

The Collector is the primary officer at the district level and has overall responsibility for planning, implementation, coordination, monitoring and supervision. For 2004-2005, Rs 2020 crore have been allocated for the programme in addition to 20 lakh tonnes of foodgrains.
