In Ted Hughes’s poem “The Laburnum Top,” the significance of yellow is well-explained and extends from the beginning till the end of the poem. The poet expounds the interactive relation between a Laburnum tree and a goldfinch. The goldfinch is a yellow coloured North American bird and the Laburnum tree possesses yellow flowers. The yellow colour paints their appearances bright. Also, the usage of the word ‘yellow’ repeatedly in the first stanza, symbolises death (refers to the yellow leaves), silence (refers to the day time that’s without rain or wind) other than beauty. In short, the poet is elucidating the melancholic condition of the Laburnum Tree which has turned silent and is dying as it’s without any seeds.
