What is the theme of the poem 'the laburnum top'??

Dear Student, 

 In the poem 'The Laburnum Top' the poet has explained about the symbiotic relationship between the goldfinch and the laburnum tree. The chirrup of the goldfinch and his chicks makes the dead silent tree alive. The tree, on the other hand,  gives protection and houses the chicks of the goldfinch. This complementary relationship is necessary for the survival of both. This shows that life is a process of exchange and transformation. Without exchange of energy, there is no life. The goldfinches transform the tree and make it alive. Without the goldfinch and the chicks, the laburnum is just another tree.

This poem symbolizes the ''HARDSHIPS IN LIFE''. It is an afternoon in the month of september and there is silence. Suddenly a goldfinch appears and the silence breaks into sound of twitching of wings and chirping.  Mother goldfinch has brought food for her babies, the engine of the bird's family. Movement of goldfinch is so smooth. She is working to provide nutrition to the family.  In the end, goldfinch again flies in the sky leaving the laburnum again into silence.

The poet has used the laburnum tree and goldfinch as a symbol of life and its fluctuations.It indicates that life is a process of exchange and transformation. The poem symbolises that happiness is short lived which is evident from the poem as with the arrival of goldfinch the tree suddenly becomes active,noisy and full of life.But this happiness is temporary as with the departure of goldfinch,the tree becomes silent once again. This poem is written by Ted Hughes. The theme of this can be that 'THAT NOTHING REMAINS FOREVER' every single thing has its own time and importance in the life. Even joy joy & happiness remains for short as we have seen in the poem that goldfinch came and made the silent tree as tremble & thrill . And again went to bring food for her nestling/nestlings.
