What kind of a contrast does the poet create in the first stanza through the images of the nature? the poem is sympathy by Paul Laurence Dunbar.

The first stanza of the poem creates a visual imagery in the mind of the reader. It shows what the bird is missing out on as it is caged. It paints a picture of a wonderful world outside which the caged bird can't experience. This is also the plight of the African-Americans. Although a lot of prosperity and luxuries surrounded them, they can't access it because they are imprisoned by the slavery and discrimination.

Hope it helps!
