The signs that reveal that the planet is in declining health are the principal biological systems of the earth collapsing: fisheries collapse,forests disappear,grasslands are converted into barren wastelands and croplands deteriorate, all due to human actions. Several species are facing extinction because their habitats are getting destroyed by the thoughtless deeds of human beings.
Sustainable development refers to the realization of our ethical obligations towards taking care of the planet and becoming guardians of its resources for future generations. The concept of sustainable development was popularised by the World Commission on Environment and Development in 1987, its report outlined the concept as development that met the needs of the present without comprising the ability of the future generations to meet their needs. People need to be made aware of the fact that the greatest threat to the earth is mankind, our relationship with nature must be one of partnership and not dominance. Thoughtless consumption of the earth's resources would lead to depletion of these resources without enough time left to replenish stocks for the future generations to come. All that would be left for them would be barren lands and deserts.
