what type of substance is used for preparing standard solution?

To prepare standard solution, the ideal substance should be:

i. The substance should be unreactive and unaffected by atmosphere. Eg. Solid NaOH is hygroscopic i.e. it absorbs moisture from the atmosphere. Thus, it is not an ideal compound to make a standard solution.

ii. It's pure form should be available.

iii. It should easily dissolve in water as we prepare standard solutions in water.

iv. The solution on heating should not be spoiled by heat

A Standard Solution is prepared by dissolving an accurately weighed amount of a substance called Primary Standard Substance in a definite volume of solution. The primary Standard substance shuold fulfill the following characteristics.

(a) it should be available in a high degrree of purity

(b) it should be stable and unaffected by the atmosphere

(c)it should not be an efflouscent  or deliquiscent

(d) it should be readily so2luble in water

(e) its solution in distilled water should not deteriorate on heating

eg.s of primary standard solutions : crystalline oxallic acid, and unhydrous Na2CO3 .,pottassium dichromate..etc
