What was Rutherford impressed by when he gave his atomic structure

Dear Student,

Rutherford's Gold Foil experiment is officially known as Geiger-Marsden experiment.

Prior to this experiment, the plum pudding model which was hypothesized by J.J Thomson was thought of as the visual explanation of the atom.
According to this model, negative charges are embedded in a positively charged sphere.
Thus, before the experiment, the scientists thought that the alpha particles would pass through the gold foil and would deflect very little.
In the experiment, they observed that most particles passed through the foil. However, few particles were deflected at large angles and very few even bounced back at the alpha-particle source, which was highly unexpected and shocking.
Thus, based on this, it was hypothesized that the atom contains a tiny region of positive charge in the centre called the nucleus, rather than throughout the atom.

Hope this helps.
