what was the author notice one sunday afternoon? what is his mother's reaction

Dear Student, 

One Sunday afternoon, as the author was sitting at the dining-room table, doing his homework, he smelled something strange. And then he noticed smoke pouring in through the seams of the ceiling. The author and his mother ran out into the front yard and they observed that flames has already engulfed the roof of the house, and it was spreading pretty fast. 
The author's mother ran back into the house twice. First time, she went inside to rescue a small metal box full of important documents. And the second time, she went inside to get the pictures and letters of her dead husband. She risked her life only to save a few important documents and pictures.
