The author's intention when we went to meet Connie was to return her husband Jim's last letter to her and apologize for invading her personal property.
When the author met Connie, he greeted her and wished her a Merry Christmas as it was christmas day and then showed her the letter. For some time, Connie was rather lost but then, she started crying and talking to the author as if he was Jim. Actually, poor old Connoe had mistaken him for Jim and thought that Jim ahd come back to her from the war on Christmas day, just as he'd promised and the author didn't want to correct her as he figured that since she was so old and had been alone for such a long time, he couldn't just destroy such a happy moment for her.
