what were franz's feeling as he set out for scool and why?

When Franz started for school very late that morning he was in great dread of a scolding, especially because M. Hamel had said that he would question the students on participles, and Franz did not know the first word about them. For a moment he thought of running away and spending the day out of doors. It was a warm and bright day with the birds chirping at the edge of the woods and the Prussian soldiers drilling in the open field back of the sawmill. All these seemed much more tempting than the rule for participles.
