What were the contributions of the Cholas in the field of art, architecture, and literature?

The Chola Dynasty was one of the ancient dynasty which ruled in South India.There contribution in te field of art, architecture and literature was remarkable. They were known for their unique art and sculpture. The temples built by them are famous for Tamil architecture.

 The Brihadeshwara temple constructed by Rajaraja-I of the Chola Dynasty is a benchmark of architectural excellence. Another temple built by his son Rajindra I at Gagaikondacholapuram. These temples are in the form of pyramidical shape and have huge gateways called Gopurams.They were dedicated to Lord Shiva.  On the outer surface of the  pyramidical tower sculptures of numerous deities were engraved. These temples also had huge courtyards for large gatherings and discussions on important matters. 

The Cholas were also well known for their bronze sculptures especially the image of Nataraja- Shiva, the Lord of Dance. It depicted a new dimension in the field of art.
Some of the famous Tamil literature also aroused during the Chola period. Sivagachintamani and Kambaramayanam were well known literary works.
