What will happen to the activity of nitrogenase enzyme, in the absence of leghaempglobin in root nodules?

Dear Student,

The nitrogenase enzyme requires anaerobic conditions to function. The leghaemoglobin is an adaptation in the root nodule that ensures the protection of nitrogenase enzyme from molecular oxygen. Leghaemoglobin act as an oxygen scavenger thus providing anaerobic conditions for nitrogenase enzyme.
If leg- haemoglobin is absent in root nodules, it will result in the reduced activity of nitrogenase enzyme as it will not be able to function in aerobic conditions.
