When a magnetic compass is brought near a current carrying wire, the compass needle gets deflected. Why does this happens?

A magnetic compass gets deflected only in the presence of external magnetic torque. When a magnetic compass is brought near a current carrying conductor the needle gets deflected because of the magnetic field produced by the current carryung conductor.

It is so because a current carrying wire act as a magnet and we all know that the compaas get deflected if we bring a magnet near it.
