The date 19th February, 1630 is the traditional date that is given in two unreliable works like Jedhe Shakavali and Suryavansham, both of which again are mutually inconsistent. The correct date according to eminent historians like Sir Jadunath Sarkar, B.G. Tilak and V.S. Wakaskar is Monday, 10th April, 1627. Shivaji were 53 years old when he died. The correct date seems to be noon, Sunday, 4th April, 1680. The latter date seems more plausible than 3rd April because it was recorded that when Shivaji died there was a full moon of the month of Chaitra. Now the full moon extended to both 3rd and 4th April (Saturday and Sunday). If the Sabhasad (a biography of Shivaji written in 1697) and the English Factory Records are followed then the date of Shivaji's death should be 4th April, 1680.
