2. (a) Most of the carbon compounds give a lot of heat and light when burnt in air. Saturated hydrocarbons burn with a clean flame and no smoke is produced. The carbon compounds, used as a fuel, have high calorific values. Therefore, carbon and its compounds are used as fuels.

(c) Uses of diamond are:

1) One of the most common uses of diamond is in jewellery. Well cut diamonds make excellent jewellery and are very expensive.

2) Synthetic diamonds are put in drill bits and saws to cut different materials.

3) As diamonds are very hard, they are be used to cut and polish gemstones.

4) They are used as micro bearings in many small mechanical devices and laboratory instruments.

5) Diamond is very stable to heat and is therefore used in microelectronic devices to protect heat sensitive parts of electronics.

6) Diamonds are present in the windows that cover lasers, X-rays and vacuum chambers.

7) Diamonds form the coating of wear resistant parts which are used to protect the surface of mechanical parts prone to wear and tear​​​​​​
