where does air come from

Since 500 millions years ago oxygen has been the 21% of our air. As I remember, it is the common misconception that woods are responsible for the oxygen we inhale, while in reality woods consume nearly the same amount of oxygen they produce, and the main source of oxygen on Earth comes from plankton.
