Which atom of P more electronegative, that in PCl3 or that in PCl5? Please explain.
Phosphorous electronegativity is less than that of Chlorine.
PCl3 has 3 Chlorine, in which the three Cl takes away the bond pair electron towards itself making P as P3+, wheras PCl5
has 5 Chlorine, in which the five Cl takes away the bond pair electron towards itself making P as P5+. So the electronegativity of P3+ > P5+
That means PCl3 is more electronegative than PCl5
PCl3 has 3 Chlorine, in which the three Cl takes away the bond pair electron towards itself making P as P3+, wheras PCl5
has 5 Chlorine, in which the five Cl takes away the bond pair electron towards itself making P as P5+. So the electronegativity of P3+ > P5+
That means PCl3 is more electronegative than PCl5
