When the complex is not being formed then it is in +2 state and when complex is formed it would be in +1 state which is unstable

Cu, because it is more stable in +2 state then in +1 state, which it is converted for to reaction with CN as carbon forum three books with nitrogen and one bond with Cu, making it rather unstable

generally present in Cu+2 (aqueous)state but when it forms complex it attains Cu+1 state which is an unstable oxidation state of copper.
