Who are the three girls? Where have they gone?

Dear student

The three girls are the poet's mother and the mother's cousins or sisters. When they were looking at the photograph, the mother had lost both of her cousins. Later when the poet looks at the photograph, she too had lost her mother. We know this because the poet says that â€‹both of their laughs were wry with the laboured ease of loss.
