Muhammad Ghori was the Sultan of the Ghurid empire from 1173 to 1202. Muhammad Ghori was primarily responsible for the establishment of Islamic rule  in mediaeval India. He defeated Prithviraj Chauhan, the ruler of Delhi, in 1192. With this, northern India became a part of the Ghurid empire. He left Delhi under the governorship of Qutb ud din Aibak who, upon the death of Ghori, established the first independent Islamic dynasty to rule over Delhi.
