Aurangzeb's reign is described as the most disturbed amongst all Mughal rulers because of the following reasons:
- Over ambitious​ : Aurangzeb expanded his territories to the extent no other Mughal ruler could. In the process, he adopted certain rampant measures that disturbed the secular fabric of his regime. He ordered destruction of Hindu temples and schools of non-Muslims. Even the people who did not dress like Muslims were punished. He demolished Christian settlements and imprisoned Christian missionaries.
- Ruthless : He ordered a long list of executions that included his own brother Dara Shikoh, allied brother Murad Baksh, nephew Sulaiman Shikoh,Sarmad Kashani, a Sufi, Sambhaji and Guru Teg Bahadur, amongst others. He did not think twice before executing anyone.
- Adopted anti insurgency tactics : Aurangzeb deviated from the traditional form of warfare and adopted anti insurgency tactics. As a result, there was constant conflict between Marathas and Mughal at several places.
- Extremely orthodox : He was extremely orthodox and banned all forms of music and dance.
- An expanse too difficult to control : He expanded his territories to the extent that it was difficult to control them. By the time Aurangzeb died, his territory was fraught with rebellions at several places. Constant wars also put the pressure on the taxpayers as extra taxes.
