Why adenine does not base-pair with cytosine, and why thymine does not base-pair with guanine? Answer me fast...

Dear student,

Chargaff's rule tells that the number of purine should be equal to number of pyrimidine i.e Purine (Adenine + guanine) = Pyrimidine (Cytosine + Thymine). As in double stranded DNA, adenine has to base pair with thymine and guanine has to base pair with cytosine, so the ratio of pyrimidine and purine is 1:1. Hence each strand will have same number of nitrogenous bases and will be constant for a DNA molecule.
