Wood is good choice for boats since Wood's weight per unit volume is low. This helps to make lighter vessels which can carry more deadweight as compared to a steel vessel of same geometry. Boats can also be made of steel or fibre glass or similar materials. Wood is also easily workable material, easily repairable too.
