Why are different types of punishments given to different types of crime?

Different types of punishments are imposed for different crimes because the severity of the crime may differ. Depending upon severity, the following types of punishments may be imposed.

1. Fines. Fines are usually imposed for very minor crimes like traffic violation. Fines of varying amounts may be imposed.
2. Imprisonment: This is the most common form of punishment. The duration of imprisonment may vary depending upon the severity of the crime.
3. Death sentence. Death by hanging is the rarest form of punishment that is reserved for particularly heinous crimes like murder and terrorism.
