they transmit electrical impulses from one part of the body to the other though chemical and electrical impulses .thus they are called chemical messengers

because the harmones have their effect at the sites which is different  from the sites they are made. harmone is produced in one part of the body but reacts on soe other part of the body

They are called so because the site where they act is away from the site of their production.
