Why are not all animals oviparous? Does vivipary offer an advantage to organisms?
Dear student
All animals are not oviparous because each animal has different inbuilt system for reproduction, some lay eggs because they have the capability to do so but some give birth to young ones. Such animals are called viviparous. Viviprous organisms have certain advatages over oviparous organisms like-
1) As the embryo develops inside the mother's body, it has no potential threats from any predators unlike oviparous organisms and that is why oviparous organims have to lay eggs more in number.
2) As the development takes inside the body, the embryo gets better nourishment and also, there is a direct bond of mother and foetus whole time during development with the help of placenta.
3) Egg laying females cannot leave the eggs and have to provide them constant warmth which is not so in viviparous females who can walk around freely.
Hope this helps!
