why are some question words like what,why,who are used in the beginning of sentences

The words who, what, when, why etc. are known as interrogative words and fall into the particular category of wh-interrogatives. The reason why they are used in the beginning is because the syntax demands so. As they are additives, the framing of a question using the wh-interrogatoves, needs to have the interrogative word in the beginning.
