Why are stilt roots produced by some plants?

dear student 
stilt roots are adventitious roots which provide support for the vertical growth of the plant specially when stem is not very hard and the plant is tall such as in case of maize and sugarcane. so they increase the stability of plant and prevent bending of stems.
