why did Dr. Sadao was not able to finish the letter he had started about the prisoner in his house, why he was able to through him back into the water at sea shore, why he was worried about him when the general said he will get the prisoner killed for him, why he helped the prisoner to escape?

Sadao faces a dilemma in terms of choosing between his duty as a doctor and that of a patriot. Hence, his conflict is between patriotic fervour and medical ethics. As a doctor, it was duty to help the wounded prisoner while as a Japanese citizen, he should not have given shelter to the American soldier. But Sadao, a conscientious man chooses to put a human being over a citizen and takes care of the wounded war prisoner.
