Why did the narrator's mother allow mrs.douling to take away her precious thing

Mrs Dorling convinced the narrator's mother that she would take care of her belongings at the time of war. The narrator's mother feared for her family's lives and belongings and gave them to Mrs Dorling for safe keeping. They included her precious crockery, cutlery, vases, clothes, etc.
