Why did Tsetan stop the car and jump out of it?

Tsetan stopped the car and jumped out of it because there was snow on the way up ahead. He had assessed that there was no way around the snow, so he wanted to test whether the top layer was slippery or their car could pass over it. He even threw handfuls of dirt over the snow to create friction so that their car would not slip and turn over.
