Why do metals and none metals react? ILLUSTRATE WITH EXAMPLE

Sodium is a metal and Chlorine is a non-metal, so when Sodium and Chlorine react  to form Sodium Chloride (NaCl), they do so by transfer of electron and form an ionic compound.

Now, Atomic Number of Sodium is 11 and that of Chlorine is 17.

The number of electrons in K L M shells; in Sodium are 2, 8, 1 and, in Chlorine are 2, 8, 7.

So, Sodium loses an electron from its outermost shell M now, Sodium has 10 electrons in its shell (2, 8) and becomes positively charged ion. The electron lost by Sodium is gained by Chlorine, in its outermost shell M, so Chlorine now has 18 electrons in its shell (2, 8, 8) and becomes negatively charged ion.

In Sodium Chloride, both Sodium and Chloride are attracted to each other due to opposite charges on them and they exist as cluster of oppositely charged ions.
