Why do peninsular rivers have shorter and shallower courses?

Peninsular rivers have a shorter course because the mountains they originate in are not as distant from the oceans as the northern Indian mountains. They have shallower courses because they flow through the rocky terrain of the Deccan plateau which is more difficult to erode than the northern Indian plains.
