Why do school bags have broad straps? What problem can a school child face if the starps are narrow?

Dear Student,

We know that pressure is inversely proportional to area. Here school bags are provided with broad straps so as to increase area and decrease pressure. Thus children do not feel the heavy load of the objects kept in the bag.

P = F/A therefore, As area increases. pressure decreases.

It is difficult to hold a school bag having a thin str ap because the pressure on the shoulders is quite large. As we know that, the area upon which a force is acting upon has an inverse relationship with the pressure. The smaller is the surface area; the larger will be the pressure on the surface. In the case of a thin strap, the contact surface area is very small. So, it can be implied that the pressure exerted on the shoulder is very large.
