Why do xylem vessels have secondary cell wall?

Dear student.

Secondary cell wall is seen only in mature and nondividing cells. Xylem vessel bears secondary cell wall as it provides mechanical support to these vessels in order to transport water to long distance.

This is why secondary cell wall is present in xylem vessel.

Following secondary thickening of the xylem cell walls, lignin is deposited between the newly formed tracheary elements and within their walls. ... Lignin, therefore, provides a hydrophobic inner surface to the cell wall that facilitates water transport
