Why do you think the narrator travelled to Burlington House Nursing Home to return the letter? And why did he not break it to Mrs. Macpherson that he wasn?t Jim?

Dear student,

Here are the answers:

a) While repairing a roll-top table the narrator finds a secret space in the last drawer that contained a letter inside the tin box written by Jim Macpherson.

Jim Macpherson had written this letter to his wife Connie. The letter mentioned an incident, when the German and English soldiers celebrated Christmas together . After reading the letter, the narrator decided to return the letter to Mrs. Connie Macpherson. The narrator wanted to make sure that the letter should reach Connie. Thus he travelled to Burlington House Nursing Home to return the letter.

b) When the narrator came to see Connie and gave her the box, she mistook him for her husband Jim. Connie was around 100 years old.  She was waiting for her husband for a very long time. When the narrator gave her the letter she was filled with joy. It was the best Christmas present that she had got. He did not disclose to her that he wasn't Jim because he did not want to spoil her joy.

Regards
