Why does the objective lens of a microscope have smaller aperture than the eye piece

Dear student,

The objective of a microscope is small in diameter because its function is to collect light from the specimen and focus it inside the microscope tube. Most high-magnification objective lenses are very small in diameter. The idea is to keep the focal length as short as possible to maximize the magnification while keeping the diameter as small as possible to increase the f/number and thereby give the user more depth of field.
