Why does the poet feel Aunt Jennifer will nevver be able to escape from her oppression?

The poet feels that Aunt Jennifer will never be able to escape from her oppression because of the massive weight of Uncle's wedding band which sat heavily upon her hand. Its a metaphorical reference to how Aunt Jennifer has to subjugate herself to her husband as a married woman and she has become habituated to the loss of her freedom. She has suffered so many ordeals that only death can free her now because she has lost her will to seek freedom.
