Grandfather realised that. We were not well to do, and could not afford the frequently loss of dishes ,clothes, curtains and wallpaper. So, grandfather sold toto.

Toto was clever monkey but he was over active and couldn't adjust with the other pet animals or even members of the writer's family. He caused a lot of destruction and didn't learn to live with a family . He was always tearing things to pieces and making people who came to the narrator's house uncomfortable. He would break dishes and tear curtain , clothes and wall paper. The writer's family were not well not well to do and they couldn't afford the losses created by Toto so grandfather and the writer realised that Toto was not the sort of pet they could keep and he was sold back to the tonga driver for only three rupees.

Hope it is clear to you
