why is an artificial pacemaker called life-saving instrument?

Our heart beats 70-75 times in a minute to circulate blood. The rhythmic contractile activity of the heart is initiated and maintained by the pacemaker, sino-atrial node(SAN). In case of failure of SAN, an artificial pacemaker is grafted inside the body to maintain the activities of the natural SAN node. Therefore, the artificial pacemaker is known as the life-saving instrument.
