Why is anhydrous AlCl3 used as catalyst in several organic reactions?

Anhydrous AlCl3 is used as catalyst due to two major reason :
1.It is a lewis acid so its can accept electron to allow the formation of electrophile i.e carbocation
2.Its also increase the rate of reaction.

Anhydrous AlCl3acts as a lewis acid, thus it can accept electron to form intermediates and speed up the reaction.AlCl3 will lead to the formation of a carbocation which helps in the elctrophilic substitution reaction.
