Why is Continuos tense is also called Progresive tense


 

the continuous tense is also known as progressive tense because at that time the work is in progress 

ie. it is still being done.

The continuos tense is also referred to as progressive tense because the action denoted by it is in progress or continuation. For example:

She was doing her homework. ('homework' was in progress)
I am speaking over the phone. ('speaking' is in progress)

because it denotes an action which is going on at the time of speaking

Because continuous means progresive i.e. the action which is in progress or continuous at the time of speaking meaning thereby the action which is going on at the particular time of speaking.
