why is excessive irrigation harmful to crop?

it is harmful because the plants not only need water but air too and air is present in some spaces in the soil is we add excessive water the air will escape in the form of bubbles and no air will be present in the soil and like humans plants also need air for survival

if too much of water is in the soil then water will log and there wont be an air for the plant to breathe through roots.

Water is very important for the growth of plants but excessive irrigation of field leads to water logging of soil. Too much water is harmful for crop production as discussed under: ... This is due to the reason that excess water affects soil aeration and hence plants roots do not grow properly.
