Why is Taplow worried about his 'remove'?

Taplow needed to pass in Latin under Mr. Crocker Harris. To be removed and promoted to the next class he had to attend extra classes with the soon to retire Mr. Harris. But going by his reputation of being a strict and unforgiving teacher, Taplow was worried about his remove, because he was unsure if Crocker-Harris would promote him to the next class.

Taplow was in lower 5th standard he can't promote to higher class until he get his remove it is a certificate of promotion to next class. He was worry about it because it much depend on how he performed in the examination
