The distance between the Earth and stars is very large, and is inconvenient to use kilometer. There for it is expressed in light years. 1 light year=distance travelled by light in 1 year.

On Earth, we use kilometre to describe the distances which are long. But in the vast universe kilometre becomes an extremely so all unit and thus it becomes inconvenient to use kilometre. Thus, the scientists developed a unit called light year to describe the distance between two stars or the distance of various plants and stars from the earth.
