Why is water called as the 'Universal Solvent' ?

Dear Student,

@ pankajtheprince007,

Good answer! Keep it up!

Water is a polar compound. Oxygen of water is negatively charged and hydrogen is positively charged. So negative part of water attracts the positive part of other substance and positive part of water gets attached to negative part of the substance.

Due to this property, it dissolves most of the substance in it. So it is called universal constant.

Water can dissolve alcohol also in it. As water can make hydrogen bond with alcohol molecule, so it dissolves in it.

Water is called the the universal solvent because of it's ability to dissolve or dissociate most compounds. It can do this because of it's polarity.
